Deerfield River
Massachusetts' premier trout tailwater — cold, dam-controlled water pouring out below Fife Brook Dam through the Charlemont-to-Shelburne Falls whitewater and trout reach, stocked with rainbows and browns that hold over into wild fish. Flow is entirely generation-driven: it fishes best on low, stable releases and turns into pushy whitewater when Brookfield spins the turbines, so the release schedule matters more than any single CFS number.

Swift River
Massachusetts' most famous coldwater tailwater — the Swift flows out of the bottom of Quabbin Reservoir below Winsor Dam, staying cold and clear year-round and holding wild and holdover rainbows, browns, and brook trout. The renowned catch-and-release fly water sits just below the dam (the Y-Pool and the runs downstream); flow is reservoir-release-driven, not rain-driven, so it fishes when other rivers are blown out.

Connecticut River
New England's great river — the Connecticut runs the length of the Pioneer Valley as a big, slow, warmwater fishery for smallmouth, largemouth, northern pike, and carp, and hosts the region's signature spring American shad run up past the Holyoke fishlift. This is bank-and-boat water, not a wading river; flow is huge and dam-influenced through Turners Falls and Holyoke.

Merrimack River
The Merrimack enters Massachusetts as a big, powerful river through Lowell, Lawrence, and Haverhill to the sea — a strong smallmouth fishery with a spring American shad run, plus largemouth, pike, and carp in the slower reaches. This is bank-and-boat water: flow is large and dam-influenced, not something you wade.

Housatonic River
The Berkshires' big trout-and-bass river — the upper Housatonic winds through Lenox, Lee, and Great Barrington as a rich, weedy, hatch-heavy river with a nationally known catch-and-release trout reach and strong smallmouth and largemouth below. Note the long-standing PCB advisory: fish here are catch-and-release only through much of the river — do not eat them.

Millers River
One of Massachusetts' best all-around rivers — the Millers runs east from Winchendon through Athol and Erving to the Connecticut, a stocked-and-wild trout river up top that grows into a strong smallmouth stream with a famous whitewater reach in the middle. Cold tributaries and good hatches make the upper river a genuine fly fishery.

Westfield River
A long Wild & Scenic river draining the Berkshire hilltowns — cold, clean trout water up in the branches around Knightville and Chesterfield, warming into a smallmouth river as it nears Westfield and the Connecticut. Stocked heavily with rainbows and browns, with wild trout in the colder tributaries.

Charles River
Greater Boston's river — the Charles winds 80 miles from Hopkinton through the western suburbs to the Esplanade, and much of it fishes like a chain of ponds: strong largemouth, smallmouth in the rockier reaches, plus pickerel, pike, and carp. The urban lower basin is a legitimate and improving bass fishery. Mercury and urban advisories apply; catch-and-release is wise.
