The “Big” Manistee starts as an intimate, cedar-lined brook-and-brown stream west of Grayling, cold and clear over sand and gravel. A flies-only trophy stretch runs M-72 down to CCC Bridge — quiet, technical water where fish grow large. Above the dams it's all wild trout; the salmon-and-steelhead circus stays below Tippy.

The “Mighty Mo” is Michigan's flagship tailwater — 35 miles of ice-free, 200-ft-wide river that fishes every month. Missouri-smooth and technical up top, it grows huge steelhead runs, a Skamania summer strain, gray-drake trout hatches, and a genuinely strong summer smallmouth fishery. Warm dam discharge keeps it open through the coldest weeks.

The “Big Man” below Tippy is one of the West Side's premier tailwaters — a broad, powerful river that gives beginning and intermediate waders room to work. Fall kings stack the gravel shoals, chrome follows the eggs through November and December, and spring turns to pre-spawn smallmouth and salmon-fry streamer fishing.

The Mason Tract — 4,500+ acres donated by auto pioneer George Mason — is arguably Michigan's prettiest wade water: a quiet, cedar-lined, spring-fed ribbon past the Mason Chapel. Artificial-flies-only, catch-and-release through the heart of the tract means wild, wary brookies and browns in gin-clear water.

The Detroit metro's best fly water, hands down — trophy smallmouth from Dexter down through Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, all within a bike ride of downtown. Gravel runs, log jams, and slow pools between Delhi and Hudson Mills hold bronzebacks; the tailwater below Flat Rock Dam turns it into a four-season fishery with lower-river steelhead.

Michigan's longest river and its great urban fishery — the Sixth Street Dam wall in downtown Grand Rapids stacks steelhead, kings, coho, and football lake-run browns right in the city. Upstream toward Lansing it's prime smallmouth, walleye, and pike water; the bayous below hold pike, bass, and panfish. Big water — think bank and boat, not wade, in Grand Rapids.

A classic small-stream dry-fly fishery — narrow, cold, cedar-lined and full of wild brook trout, flowing through Lovells and its blue-ribbon flies-only water. Intimate, wadeable, old-Michigan quiet: throw a single dry and hunt rising brookies under the sweepers.

The Boardman — renamed the Ottaway on its restored reaches — is the birthplace of the “Adams” dry fly and a cold, groundwater-fed freestone minutes from downtown Traverse City. Removing the Brown Bridge, Boardman, and Sabin dams reconnected ~160 miles of coldwater stream. Upper reaches hold wild brookies and browns; below the Union Street dam sees steelhead and salmon.

The Jordan was the very first stream added to Michigan's Natural Rivers system in 1972, and it earns it — a spring-fed, cedar-canopied valley of wild brook trout rarely topping 60°F. The upper river runs cold and intimate through the Mackinaw State Forest along the 18-mile Jordan River Pathway; below Graves Crossing it turns to lake-run browns, steelhead, and salmon.

The steelhead heavyweight of southwest Michigan — Indiana stocks 200,000+ steelhead and 40,000 coho into it every year, and fish routinely top 20 pounds. Too big and pushy to wade safely; work it from a boat or the dam accesses at Niles and Berrien Springs. Between runs it grows high-teens smallmouth plus pike, walleye, and catfish.

The Little Man is Michigan's steelhead nursery — the DNR weir at Old Stronach is the state's only steelhead egg-take and the source of the wild winter-run strain. A small, forested, wadeable stream of spawning gravel, undercut banks, and deep bends; wild brookies and browns up top, chrome and kings down low.

The fastest river in the Lower Peninsula — a ~15-ft/mile plunge of cold, riffled water racing 40 miles to Burt Lake. Wild brookies and browns dominate, and the prized Burt Lake brown-trout strain is so hardy its brood stock is spread to rivers statewide. Much of the bank is private, so wade-and-stay-wet is the rule — and the current does not forgive.

A surprisingly wild-feeling trout-and-steelhead stream right on Grand Rapids' doorstep. Below the Rockford Dam it runs about seven miles of spring and fall steelhead and salmon down to the Grand; above, it's rainbow, brown, and brook trout with hatches that rival the Au Sable. Soft-bottomed in spots — pick your wading lines.

A blue-ribbon DNR Natural River threading 105,000 acres of Pigeon River Country State Forest — elk country, quiet water, and spring-fed chill holding wild brookies and browns. No marquee Hex circus; think tricos, small mayflies, caddis, and solitude off any of its road bridges. Below M-68 the season runs through December.

A reborn river — cleaned up from its industrial past into one of the few Michigan streams holding smallmouth, walleye, steelhead, AND salmon. Above Allegan Dam it's firm-bottomed, wadeable smallmouth water; below the dam it goes big and deep with fall salmon and steelhead best worked from a boat. Fort Custer Rec Area is the easy public gateway.

The big border river between Michigan and Wisconsin, a trophy smallmouth, walleye, pike and lake sturgeon fishery running from Iron Mountain down to Green Bay. Dam-controlled and largely un-wadeable — this is a float-and-boat river with world-class smallmouth below its many powerhouses.

A river of two personalities: cold, public, wadeable trout water up top through the Rifle River Recreation Area, then a flashier, canoe-clogged lower run through private land to Saginaw Bay. Renowned for brown trout — tributary Houghton Creek gave up a 37-inch state-record brown in 1952. Fall brings sparse Chinook and lake-run browns; spring brings a big sucker run.

Michigan's “comeback river” — a spring and fall steelhead run pushes up from Lake St. Clair, best fished below Yates Dam in Rochester from mid-March into early April. Paint Creek, the coldwater tributary, is a genuine urban trout stream with a gear-restricted section; smallmouth and rock bass fill the warmer mainstem reaches.

The quiet one — Hesperia's White River is an under-the-radar steelhead and salmon stream with some flies-only water, springs cold enough to grow good browns, and brookies up top. Wetland-bordered and beaver-y, it rewards wading anglers who want elbow room away from the Muskegon and PM crowds. Best chrome is spring.

A true UP variety river. Below Boney Falls Dam it's slick bedrock full of brown trout and smallmouth; keep dropping downstream and bass and walleye take over, while the cold upper branches near Princeton hold wild brookies. One of the few UP streams crawling with crayfish, so the fish grow fat and chase big food.

A small, spring-fed Benzie County river and the birthplace of Michigan's salmon program, drawing heavy fall runs of Chinook and coho and a spring steelhead run to the weir near Honor. Cold, clear and famously crowded when the fish are in.

A nationally regarded smallmouth stream that flies under the radar — the free-flowing runs between Nashville and the Coldwater confluence hold big numbers of bronzebacks, and most of it wades or floats easily at summer flows. County road crossings give access every few miles; the Ada-to-Grand stretch mixes smallmouth, largemouth, and rock bass.

The Ontonagon drains a huge western-UP watershed through four branches into Lake Superior at Ontonagon, big enough for smallmouth, walleye and pike in the lower main stem and cold trout water up the branches. Fall pulls steelhead and Chinook off the big lake into the lower river. Branches run tea-stained and tannic off the highlands.

The UP's famous amber giant — stained the color of strong tea by cedar-swamp tannins and split by Michigan's second-largest waterfall. Above and below the falls it's a broad warmwater run holding pike, walleye, smallmouth, and musky potential, while cold feeder creeks hide brook trout. Fish it as a big-water river, not a wade-and-dry-fly trout stream.

A big central-Michigan river and one of the state's premier spring walleye runs, drawing enormous numbers of fish up from Saginaw Bay to the dams at Dow and Sanford each spring. Smallmouth, muskie and pike round out a strong warmwater fishery. Large and mostly un-wadeable — this is a boat-and-bank river.

A big, slow south-central UP river draining the Seney country to Lake Michigan at Manistique, carrying walleye, smallmouth, pike and a strong fall run of steelhead and salmon to the dam in town. Warmer and more fertile than the trout rivers around it.

A genuine community fishery — the Cass River Greenway has turned this Thumb-country river into a 37-mile water trail with 13 launches from Vassar to the Saginaw River. Smallmouth and pike lead the card, with carp, catfish, redhorse, and suckers rounding out a warmwater mixed bag. Frankenmuth's Fish Way reopened passage and made the in-town reach very accessible.

A wild, waterfall-strung river dropping through the Porcupine Mountains to Lake Superior, with a short lower run that draws fall steelhead and Chinook below the last falls. Upstream it's pocket-water trout fishing in a remote gorge. Not a place to wade casually — the lower falls near the mouth are dangerous.
