San Juan River
New Mexico's crown jewel and one of America's great tailwaters — the cold, clear release below Navajo Dam holds enormous rainbow and brown trout in the Quality Waters, then warms into a bass-and-catfish river downstream through Farmington and Shiprock. Flow is entirely dam-controlled: the tailwater fishes on scheduled releases, not rain, so the generation number matters more than any storm.

Rio Grande (Taos Box)
The wild heart of the Rio Grande — a deep basalt gorge north and west of Taos holding hard-fighting wild brown trout, native Rio Grande cutthroat, northern pike, and even smallmouth. Access means a steep hike into the gorge, and flows swing hard with snowmelt. A rugged, rewarding freestone big-river trout fishery.

Rio Chama
A big, beautiful northern river with two dam-controlled tailwaters — cold trout water below El Vado and below Abiquiu — bracketing a stunning Wild & Scenic canyon float. The tailwater reaches fish on managed releases (great rainbows and browns), while the canyon runs on scheduled recreation flows. Rain matters less here than what the dams are doing.

Red River
A classic Enchanted Circle trout stream dropping from the town of Red River down through a steep canyon to the Rio Grande confluence at the Wild Rivers area. Stocked rainbows up high near the fish hatchery, wild browns and cutthroat in the lower canyon. Small, cold, and scenic — a snowmelt creek that fishes best in summer and fall.

Cimarron River
A gem of a tailwater trout stream — the Cimarron flows cold and clear out of Eagle Nest Lake through the granite walls of Cimarron Canyon State Park. Managed releases keep the reach fishable much of the year, with wild browns and stocked rainbows in tight pocket water hard against the highway. Small, technical, and beloved.

Pecos River (Upper)
The famous upper Pecos — a cold, clear trout river tumbling out of the Pecos Wilderness through Terrero and the village of Pecos. Heavily stocked rainbows along the accessible NM-63 corridor, with wild browns and native cutthroat in the headwater reaches and side canyons. New Mexico's most popular mountain trout stream, and for good reason.

Gila River
The wild river of the southwest — the Gila runs free out of the nation's first wilderness through remote desert canyons to Gila, Redrock, and Virden. It's New Mexico's premier river smallmouth fishery, with hard-fighting bronzebacks in the clear canyon pools, plus native fish and Gila trout in the cold headwater forks. A rugged, roadless-in-places river worth the effort.

Animas River
A free-flowing snowmelt river dropping out of Colorado through Aztec and Farmington to meet the San Juan — cold trout water up high softening into smallmouth and warmwater fishing in town. Runs big and off-color through the May–June snowmelt, then settles into a clear summer float-and-wade river.

Jemez River
The trout river of the Jemez Mountains west of Santa Fe — the East Fork and main Jemez run cold and clear through the caldera country past Jemez Springs, stocked with rainbows and holding wild browns and native cutthroat in the headwater forks. Rio Grande (Central)
The big middle river through Española, the White Rock canyon, and Albuquerque — a broad warmwater float with a cold tailwater kick below Cochiti Dam. Home to a growing urban carp-on-the-fly scene, channel catfish, white bass, and the odd trout below Cochiti. A bank, boat, and levee fishery, not a wading river.

Rio Costilla
A native-trout showcase in the far north — Rio Costilla runs off the Latir Peaks and through the Valle Vidal, the site of one of the West's great Rio Grande cutthroat restoration projects. Cold, remote, small-stream fishing for wild native cutthroat and brookies under special catch-and-release, single-hook rules. A destination for anglers chasing a native trout in wild country.

Rio Ruidoso
The trout stream of the Sacramento Mountains — the Rio Ruidoso runs cold out of Sierra Blanca through the resort town of Ruidoso and Hollywood before joining the Rio Hondo. Stocked rainbows and some wild browns in accessible town and canyon reaches, a rare mountain trout fishery in the far south of the state. Popular, easy-access, and scenic.

Rio Hondo (Taos)
A small, cold trout creek falling from the Taos Ski Valley high country through Arroyo Hondo to the Rio Grande gorge. Tight, brushy pocket water with wild browns and cutthroat up top and stocked rainbows lower down. A snowmelt stream that runs hard in spring and fishes best once summer flows settle.

Pecos River (Lower)
The long warmwater Pecos of the eastern plains — a dam-and-irrigation river running from Santa Rosa and Sumner reservoirs down through Fort Sumner, Roswell, and Carlsbad. Walleye, white bass, largemouth, and channel and flathead catfish fill the reaches below the dams, especially the tailwaters below Sumner and Brantley. A bank-and-boat river tied to the reservoir release schedule.

San Francisco River
A clear desert canyon river in the far southwest, running through Reserve and the dramatic Frisco Box down past Glenwood toward the Arizona line. Excellent river smallmouth in the pools and runs, plus catfish and the odd trout in the cold upper reaches. A remote, scenic warmwater river for anglers who like solitude and wading.

Rio Grande (Lower)
The southern river below Elephant Butte and through the Bosque del Apache country — a warmwater channel of catfish, white bass, largemouth, and carp fed by dam releases and irrigation flows. Fishing tracks the Elephant Butte and Caballo release schedule; in dry stretches the river can nearly disappear. A bank-and-boat fishery for the desert South.

Canadian River
The big warmwater river of the northeast — the Canadian carves down from the plains through Conchas and Ute reservoirs to Logan and the Texas line. Below and between the dams it holds walleye, white bass, largemouth and smallmouth, and channel catfish, with the famous Mills Canyon reach for those who make the trek. A bank-and-boat prairie river tied to the reservoirs.

West Fork Gila
A cold headwater fork of the Gila running past the Gila Cliff Dwellings deep in the Gila Wilderness — one of the strongholds of the federally protected native Gila trout. Small, clear, remote pool-and-pocket water reached by trail, managed under strict catch-and-release and special-permit rules. A rare chance to catch a wild native trout in its home water.

Rio Pueblo de Taos
The stream that drains the Taos Pueblo high country and the Ranchos de Taos valley on its way to the Rio Grande gorge. The upper reaches on Taos Pueblo land are closed to non-members, but the lower public water below Los Cordovas holds browns and stocked rainbows. A small, seasonal trout stream — respect the Pueblo boundaries.

Embudo Creek
The combined Rio Pueblo–Rio Santa Barbara drainage that carves down through Dixon to the Rio Grande — a scenic small trout river of wild browns, stocked rainbows, and cutthroat in the higher forks. Roadside pocket water along NM-75 and the Carson National Forest reaches make it an accessible northern-mountain stream.

Rio Mora
A small wild-trout tributary of the upper Pecos, running out of the Pecos Wilderness to meet the main river near Terrero. Black River
A rare desert spring creek in the far southeast near Carlsbad — the Black River runs clear and cool from Blue Spring through a green ribbon of cottonwoods to the Pecos near Malaga. Its steady spring flow supports smallmouth, largemouth, and catfish in an otherwise arid landscape, plus sensitive native fish. Much of the corridor is private ranch land, so access is limited but the fishery is real.

A tiny, cold trout creek falling from the Sangre de Cristo above Arroyo Seco toward Taos. Rio Penasco
A spring-fed limestone stream on the east slope of the Sacramentos, running through Mayhill and Dunken — one of southern New Mexico's few genuine wild-brown-trout streams. Cold spring flows and rich weed beds grow surprisingly good browns in the upper reaches; much of the river crosses private ranch land, so access is limited and worth confirming.

The plains Mora — a warmwater-to-cool prairie river running east from the mountain village of Mora through La Cueva and out onto the northeastern grasslands. A small closed-basin desert stream running south from the Black Range past San Lorenzo and Mimbres before it sinks into the ground short of any sea. The cold headwaters in the Gila National Forest hold native Gila trout and stocked rainbows; much of the lower valley is private farmland. A quirky, hydrologically unique little stream with a real headwater fishery.
