James River
Virginia's greatest smallmouth river and the heart of the state's river fishing — the James runs some 340 miles from the Alleghany confluence at Iron Gate through the Piedmont to the fall line at Richmond, then tidal to the Chesapeake. The upper and middle river is a world-class wade and float smallmouth and musky fishery; the fall line and tidal river below Richmond grow giant blue and flathead catfish.

Jackson River
Virginia's premier tailwater trout river — the cold water released from Gathright Dam through the Kincaid Gorge holds wild and holdover rainbows and browns, one of the best trout fisheries in the state. Below Covington it warms into a fine smallmouth river. Flow and temperature track dam generation, so the release schedule matters more than any single number.

New River
One of the oldest rivers on Earth and Virginia's trophy smallmouth, musky, and walleye river — the ancient New flows north from the Carolina line through Galax, Radford, and Narrows to West Virginia, a big, wadeable and floatable river of ledges and islands. Legendary for citation smallmouth, native-strain walleye, and hard-fighting musky.

South Fork Shenandoah River
The crown-jewel smallmouth float of the Shenandoah Valley — a long, wadeable and floatable river running north from Port Republic past Luray to Front Royal under the Massanutten and Blue Ridge. Ledges, grass beds, and gravel bars hold outstanding numbers of smallmouth and rock bass.

North Fork Shenandoah River
The quieter, more intimate Shenandoah fork — a winding, wadeable smallmouth river running from Cootes Store past Mount Jackson and Woodstock to Strasburg through the western valley. Smaller than the South Fork but full of smallmouth and rock bass on the ledges.

Smith River
Virginia's other trophy tailwater — the cold water released from Philpott Dam creates a nationally known brown-trout fishery below Bassett and Martinsville, one of the few Southeast rivers with wild brown-trout reproduction. Flow and temperature are entirely dam-controlled, so the generation schedule and the daily thermal pulse rule the fishing.

Rappahannock River
One of Virginia's classic freestone smallmouth rivers — the Rappahannock runs off the Blue Ridge through the Piedmont past Remington and Kelly's Ford to the fall line at Fredericksburg, where dam removal reopened miles of prime bass water and a spring shad and striper run. Wadeable and floatable above the fall line, tidal below.

Rapidan River
A river of two worlds — up in Shenandoah National Park the upper Rapidan is a legendary wild brook-trout stream in tight mountain laurel, and down in the Piedmont past Culpeper it becomes a fine smallmouth and rock-bass river before joining the Rappahannock. The brookie water is catch-and-release, single-hook, artificial-only.

A crown jewel of southwest Virginia — the Clinch is one of the most biologically diverse rivers in North America and a superb smallmouth and musky fishery, running from Tazewell through Cleveland and St. Paul to Speers Ferry and Tennessee. Roanoke (Staunton) River
Virginia's long southside river — the Roanoke rises near the city of Roanoke and, below Leesville and Smith Mountain lakes, takes the name Staunton River as it flows to Kerr Reservoir. Smallmouth and rock bass in the upper river, and striped bass, catfish, and largemouth in the big lower tailwater and reservoir reaches.

The premier river of Virginia's Chowan-basin blackwater country — the Nottoway winds through the southern coastal plain from Blackstone down past Stony Creek and Sebrell, a superb smallmouth, redbreast, and Roanoke-bass river up high and a largemouth, catfish, and bowfin float lower down. Long, remote, cypress-lined.
