Yakima River
Washington's premier trout river and the only blue-ribbon wild-trout stream in the state — a big desert tailwater running from the Cascades through the Ellensburg valley and the famous Yakima Canyon to the Columbia. The upper canyon holds dense wild rainbow and cutthroat on a strict catch-and-release, selective-gear regime; the lower river warms into smallmouth water. Its 'flip-flop' flows are dam- and irrigation-controlled.

Columbia River
The great river of the West and Washington's southern and central spine — the Columbia carries enormous runs of Chinook, coho, sockeye, and steelhead, giant white sturgeon in the deep holes, trophy walleye and smallmouth, plus shad in late spring. From the border through the Hanford Reach to the Gorge and the tidal lower river, it is a big-water boat fishery where the numbers frame boating, never wading.

Skagit River
Washington's largest river, draining the North Cascades from the border through Newhalem, Marblemount, Concrete, and Mount Vernon to Puget Sound — a Wild & Scenic river with the state's biggest wild steelhead and salmon runs, plus the rare open bull-trout fishery in the upper reaches. Below three Seattle City Light dams it is a big, powerful river with world-class winter fishing and a famous bald-eagle gathering.

Cowlitz River
One of the most productive salmon and steelhead rivers in the Lower 48, draining Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens through Mayfield and Mossyrock dams to the Columbia at Longview — the tailwater below Mayfield at the Blue Creek trout hatchery is legendary for winter and summer steelhead, spring Chinook, coho, and sea-run cutthroat. The iconic glacial river off Mount Olympus, running through the Hoh Rain Forest to the Pacific near Forks — a bucket-list wild-steelhead and salmon river of milky glacial water and towering old growth. Skykomish River

Chehalis River
Washington's second-largest river by drainage — a sprawling lowland system draining the coast range and southwest interior to Grays Harbor. Wenatchee River
A beautiful eastern-Cascade river running from Lake Wenatchee through Leavenworth and the Tumwater Canyon to the Columbia at Wenatchee — holding wild redband trout, mountain whitefish, a summer steelhead run, and returning sockeye and Chinook. The Tumwater Canyon is dramatic pocket water; the lower river opens for hatchery steelhead and salmon when runs allow.

Elwha River
The most famous dam-removal river in the world — two dams came out of this Olympic river above Port Angeles, and salmon and steelhead are recolonizing the freed watershed. Fishing has been closed through the recovery, but it is a living laboratory of restoration and its runs are the peninsula's great hope. Check WDFW for the reach status before planning a trip.

Klickitat River
A Wild & Scenic river draining Mount Adams through a deep basalt canyon to the Columbia near Lyle — one of the Gorge's great summer-steelhead and salmon rivers, with a glacial tint that colors it in warm weather. It holds native redband trout, whitefish, summer and winter steelhead, and fall Chinook and coho, much of it fished by tribal and sport anglers along the scenic canyon.

Snake River
The great river of the interior, forming Washington's southeast border and running through the Lower Snake dams to the Columbia near the Tri-Cities — a big-water fishery for trophy walleye and smallmouth, white sturgeon, fall Chinook, and steelhead. Snoqualmie River
A major King County river dropping over the famous 268-foot Snoqualmie Falls near North Bend — the falls split it into an upper wild-trout river (the three forks) and a lower salmon and steelhead river through Carnation to the Snohomish. Above the falls it is fly-and-spin trout water; below, it carries fall Chinook, coho, and winter steelhead.

Bogachiel River
A classic Olympic Peninsula steelhead river near Forks, joining the Sol Duc to form the Quillayute — legendary for its early-winter hatchery steelhead and strong wild run. Clearer and quicker to fish than the glacial Hoh, it is one of the most popular drift-boat rivers on the coast.
